Salvador is a native of Guaymas. He learned much of his citrus
background from his father, who had been growing since the 1940's. He
studied Agronomy from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara. After
working in the citrus industry in the United States, Salvador returned
to Guaymas in 1981 and introduced new technology to his family's
business.
In the valley of Guaymas, the ranch soil is desert and arid, so
Salvador incorporated new drip systems and sprays systems to conserve
precious water supplies. Salvador produces and ships navel and Valencia
oranges to Cris-P Produce. He is also growing watermelons and
cantaloupes.
The navel oranges started production back in 1985, but it wasn't until
2001 after noticing a shift in consumers' interests and needs that he
begun exporting his oranges under the natura label. He not only saw the
advantages of a well defined growing market, but his interest in
maintaining a healthy orchard free of chemicals and pesticides were a
factor in his decision to shift directions in his business.
